Catechist Formation Certification

good_shepherd2-1 Christendom College offers an online catechist formation certification credentialing catechists and Catholic school teachers. It is approved by several dioceses including the Catholic Diocese of Peoria and the Catholic Diocese of Arlington. The certification consists of two semester-long, video-based courses designed especially to introduce catechists to the ministries of evangelization and catechesis and to provide an overview of the Faith they are sharing. The two courses take the students on a tour of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, but they also relate the role of catechist to the larger evangelizing mission of the Church, helping the catechists not only to teach the Faith, but also to bring his or her students into a closer personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

This first course covers the sections of the Catechism on the Creed and on prayer; the second course covers the parts on the sacraments and the moral life. Both courses include many Scriptural references which support the Faith, suggestions on how to communicate the Faith to various age groups, and insights on the relationship between catechesis to the New Evangelization. Those who complete both courses receive Catechist certification from Christendom. The cost for each course is $365, but in many cases, all or part of the cost is paid for by the catechist’s parish, school, or diocese.
